Scrollers meet to show and tell about their projects, learn from others, and engage in common projects using a fully equipped shop with multiple Scroll Saws and hundreds of project patterns. Scrolling is a wood art form that allows for creating intricate designs in wood and other materials that are not possible with most other woodworking machines.
Non-members are always invited to attend a meeting and audit the group. We currently have 8 operable machines so if you want to reserve one, be sure to register for the SIG.  You are always welcome to bring your own machine or to just come and observe.

Want to audit a Scroll Saw SIG meeting before deciding? That is Easy!

Find a meeting in the upcoming events to the right.  You are invited to attend and observe. The location is the Club address on Western Avenue. If you would like to call ahead, the Scroll Saw SIG Contact and location address is shown on the Contact Us page.

SCROLL SAW SIG MEETINGS FOR THE NEXT 60 DAYS

Greetings Scrollers,

Thank you to all of you who responded to my request for SIG ideas. I had requests for Tongs, Whistles, finishing techniques, follow the lines, and that they thought Fretwork was too difficult.

As far as fretwork goes, it is not my favorite. I do however enjoy making hanging Christmas ornaments that could be considered fretwork. I am not into building a grandfather clock case using Victorian fretwork. Just not my thing but I can teach you the techniques to get you there if that is what you want to do.

Tongs can be a fun and easy project. Simple toaster tongs are a quick and easy project and make a good hostess gift that can be cranked out in under 30 minutes. Collapsing salad tongs take a bit more time but again make a great gift.

Whistles are a fun project that can be used as a safety tool for kayakers or hikers and make an excellent way to announce lunch time at our Toy Group lunches.

Applying finish to a completed project varies on how the project will be used. It can be as simple as spraying on a clear lacquer, or oiling the project.

Following the line is something we constantly strive to improve. Early in my scrolling experience I wondered if I should be concentrating on going straight down the middle or to go to the left or the right of the line. Depending on what you are doing, you will use all 3 of these techniques. Of course following the line and not getting off track is an acquired skill. As I am sure I have told many of you most of the time it does not matter if you get off the line as long as you don’t make a drastic correction to get back on the line. That is very noticeable where if you gradually get back on the line no one will know once you take the pattern off. In some instances where you have to put 2 pieces cut separately together afterwards it is much more critical.

For the Wednesday, February 25th, SIG we will be making whistles and if time permits applying a finish. The SIG starts at 2:00 pm and if you would prefer to work on a different project please arrive early so we can prep your stock for your project before the SIG starts.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.
