President's January Message

Todd Williams | Published on 1/10/2023
Good morning:
Here’s a little run down on what you as a member of the Nevada Woodchucks haveaccomplished in 2022.
We added 36 new members last year!  I show we currently have 94 members.
We purchased a CNC router machine that is up and running and the next class is Jan 19th @ 10am.  We purchased a new saw stop table saw, the safest table saw available.
We purchased 6 new Jet 1221VS wood lathes. The first lathe SIG (special interest group) for the new lathes will be on Jan 17th @ 6:30pm. If you wanted to learn how to turn now is a great time.
We have also purchased a thunder 7545 laser engraving machine that should be delivered within a month. Classes on using this machine will be forthcoming.
We would not have been able to make most of the above purchases without the help of our grant writer, Zoe Harrold, PH.D. at Clear Horizons Consulting.
Tom Doud and Christian Ziegler have worked very hard over the past year on getting our new webpage up and running.  There are many features available. Please login and
update your profile, post photos of your wood working and check out the items that are listed for sale.
Donnah Wenstrom and her “Elves” completed 1900 toys last year for kids in need at Christmas! What an outstanding accomplishment! The toy sig is always looking for new members to help. In my opinion this is what it’s all about- bringing joy to kids at Christmas with handmade wooden toys.  The toy distribution was also covered by Channel 8 news.
Our TNT sig group made some very nice bookcases for the Spark’s Heritage Museum last year. They also made a food pantry box for one of the housing units on the UNR campus. Both of those projects showed the quality of work our members do.
The lathe sig group made over 30 bowls for the annual Empty Bowl event to benefit the Sparks Food Pantry.
John Hasenau also put in 34 hours to repair chairs, a bookcase, and a desk for people in our community.
Later this month we will be starting classes to teach Veterans some wood working skills. Mary Sedgwick has worked very hard over the past year to get this program started.
We are also looking into offering wood working classes through TMCC this coming fall.  Thank you, Ruth Gault, for working on this.
The woodchuck members had 3,480 hours of volunteer time donated to our community for service projects.
I’m sure there are other things our Sig groups have done in the past year like teaching new skills or technique, building new friendships, but overall, we should be very proud of everything we all have accomplished for our community. Thank you everyone!
Outstanding work!

Now let’s Make Saw Dust!
